The San Francisco 49ers roughed up Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton during their 24-16 victory in London last week.
Two of the hits came at a price.

The NFL levied a $12,500 fine against outside linebacker Manny Lawson for roughing the passer (specifically striking the opposing quarterback in the chest area with his helmet). The fine amount reflects the severity of the offense in the league’s eyes and also Lawson’s fine history. The league fined him last season as well.

While officials penalized Lawson for a hit on Orton, the league fined him for his actions on a different play, one in the third quarter that injured Orton. The Broncos listed Orton’s return as probable and the quarterback did not miss a play. The hit in question came on third down, ending the drive. Orton was back under center for the next series.

Lawson’s teammate and fellow outside linebacker, Ahmad Brooks, incurred a $10,000 fine for striking Orton in the head and neck area. Brooks forced a fumble on the play, but a penalty for roughing the passer nullified the turnover. The NFL also fined Brooks last season for unnecessary roughness.
