Former coach Mike Leach sued ESPN Inc. and a public relations firm on Wednesday, accusing them of libel and slander after he was fired by Texas Tech amid accusations that he mistreated a player suffering from a concussion.

The suit filed in Texas district court claims the network’s coverage of Leach’s firing last year was “willful and negligent defamation” and that it failed to “retract false and damaging statements” it made from “misinformation” provided to ESPN by Craig James, the father of the Texas Tech player.

Josh Krulewitz, spokesman for the network based in Bristol, Conn., said officials had not seen the lawsuit and declined comment.

Leach attorney Ted Liggett said the former coach wants “to set the record” straight.

“Mike Leach is adamant,” Liggett said. “Mike Leach wants his name cleared. His reputation has taken a severe hit and been tarnished.”

Oregon RB James cleared • The University of Oregon says allegations of impropriety surrounding LaMichael James and a vehicle he had been driving are unfounded. The university issued a statement Wednesday saying it was determined that James’ use of the vehicle “did not constitute a violation of NCAA legislation.” James remains eligible to play for the No. 1 Ducks, who host No. 20 Arizona on Friday.

Coffman on Big 12 team • Former Missouri tight end Chase Coffman was the only Tiger named to the Associated Press all-time, all-Big 12 team, released Wednesday. Former Texas quarterback Vince Young, former Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops were among the top selections. (Complete list of picks, C7).

Pelini: Huskers lose WR Paul • No. 16 Nebraska will be without senior wide receiver and kick returner Niles Paul as it tries to win the Big 12 North title. Head coach Bo Pelini said Paul hurt a foot at practice on Tuesday and will miss Friday’s game against Colorado. Paul’s status for the rest of the season is in doubt.

Paul has 39 catches for 516 yards and one touchdown after 11 games this season. He leads the team in receptions. Paul also has returned 16 kicks for 403 yards, including a 100-yard return for a touchdown against Oklahoma State.

Barkley USC’s practice • Quarterback Matt Barkley watched Southern California’s first practice of the week on crutches with his sprained left ankle in a walking boot. Barkley said he still hopes to play Saturday against Notre Dame. If Barkley can’t go, senior backup Mitch Mustain will start his final game at the Coliseum. Mustain has played sparingly in three seasons at USC.
