MLB: Braves reach deal with Dan Uggla on 5-yr contract extension worth $62M

Second baseman Dan Uggla has reached agreement with the Atlanta Braves on a five-year, $62 million contract extension, a league source told ESPN.com. The deal is pending completion of a physical exam, the source said.

The Braves acquired Uggla from the Florida Marlins in mid-November in a trade for utilityman Omar Infante and left-handed reliever Mike Dunn.

Uggla, 30, made two All-Star teams with Florida and has 154 home runs since his first major league season in 2006. Among National League right-handed hitters, only St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has more home runs in that span.

Uggla, who made $7.8 million last season, was eligible for salary arbitration this spring and could have been a free agent after the 2011 season. The Marlins traded him to Atlanta in November after failing to reach agreement on a long-term contract that would have kept him in Florida beyond 2011.
