A California elementary school is on lockdown today after a man identified as the school’s janitor shot an official, believed to be the principal. Parents are furious as they receive mixed information on where their children are. Crazy!
(DM) – The official was shot at the Louisiana Schnell School in Placerville, about 50 miles east of Sacramento, shortly before 11 am, said El Dorado County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jim Byers.
Neither the official nor the gunman’s identity have been confirmed by police. Local media have named the victim as principal Sam LeCara and the gunman as janitor John Harold Luebbers.
The official was rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound and is believed to be fighting for his life.
Sergeant Byers said the gunman fled on foot.
Byers said no children were injured and the school remains in lockdown.
The Placerville Union School District posted a message on its website saying students were being evacuated to the El Dorado County Fairgrounds.
The school district was asking parents not to try to pick up their children at the school. Parents were told they will be contacted once the students are released.
Now parents are becoming increasingly angry after receiving mixed information on where their children are being taken.
Byers said about 50 officers from various law enforcement agencies had launched a manhunt for the supsect.
He was later arrested at his home in ElDorado, Fox40 reported.
He was described as a short, stocky man with blond hair, driving a white Dodge pickup, and wearing a grey jacket and blue jeans.
Police were involved in a high-speed chase with a white SUV just after the shooting, Fox40 reported.
The vehicle was pulled over and a woman inside was taken into police custody. Fox40 identified her as the wife of the man who was shot, but that has not been confirmed by police.
KCRA-TV reported that the school official was transported to a local hospital. Some reports claimed he was the school principal, but that has not been confirmed.
Byers said it’s not clear what prompted the shooting.
