61 year-old woman is going down in Chicago history as being the oldest woman to give birth in the city…after serving as a surrogate for her daughter and giving birth to her own grandchild.

Sara Connell, 35, tried for years to have a baby, but was unsuccessful – so she and her mother, Kristine Casey, made a decision to do it together.
It had been 30 years since Casey had given birth, but with the help of modern fertility drugs and in vitro fertilization, she was able to successfully become pregnant with her daughter and son-in-law’s sperm and egg. She gave birth via cesarean section to Finnean Lee Connell at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Doctors had no ethical objections to the idea of a 61-year-old having a baby, as long as she had undergone a thorough medical and psychological evaluation.
“The surgery itself was uncomplicated, and the emotional context of this delivery was so profound,” said Dr. Susan Gerber, an obstetrician and maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Northwestern Memorial.
After the delivery, Casey experienced some difficulty with her kidneys, which has since been treated.
