“Summertime” is the first single taken from DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s fourth studio album, Homebase. The song was produced by Chicago-based producers Hula & K. Fingers and won a Grammy Award for best rap single in 1991. It spent a week at number #1 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart, as well as reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also became the duo’s first single to enter the UK Singles Chart, peaking at #8.

The song’s music is a replay of “Summer Madness”, a popular hit released by Kool & the Gang in 1974. From 1996 to 1998, CBBC used the background music of the song for links between programmes. It was also used in a series of commercials for supermarket chain Wal-mart (Asda). The song was also used in the introduction of NBC’s sitcom 1992 special Saved by the Bell. In 1998, the song was remixed and given the additional title of “’98”. It was released as one of the duo’s last singles in summer 1998.
