The last thing any father wants is for his daughter to fall for a perverted schmuck.  Unfortunately for you, he considers EVER GUY who pursues his daughter a perverted schmuck.  He’s got an arsenal of scare tactics that he’s gonna pull on you to get you to drop out of the race.  My dad was a BEAST when I started dating so trust me, I KNOW!  Find out how to dodge the bullets after the jump!

A FIRST IMPRESSION IS A LASTING IMPRESSION:

Meeting her parents for the first time is a very important milestone.  You want to make sure that your appearance conveys your understanding of this.  Get a fresh cut, make sure your clothes are clean, ironed and smelling good.  Leave the baggy jeans at home.  Try a pair of khakis to achieve the ‘harmless and studious’ look.  Please don’t wear any graphic tees with silly words or images such as a cannabis leaf or the words ‘I ___ on the first date’…for obvious reasons.

HANDSHAKES SPEAK VOLUMES:

When you shake her dad’s hand, he’s going to squeeze so hard you’ll feel like a bone is breaking.  What you do is squeeze back but ever so faintly.  You want him to know your no pushover but you respect his authority.  A firm handshake also conveys your willingness to step up to the plate.  Make eye contact.  Don’t be creepy about it.  A second and a half to two seconds is fine.  Make sure you address him as Mr. [insert last name here].  Don’t be so comfy as to call him by his first name.  That’ll be a big mistake.  If you’re unsure of what to call him, hit him with the ‘yes sir’, ‘no sir’.

DO YOUR RESEARCH:

Probe your girl for her dad’s interests.  Find out is he’s a football, basketball or boxing type of guy.  Is he active in their church?  Where does he work?  What’s his profession?  The idea is to gather as much information as you can so that you can make great small talk when you meet him.

CONVINCE HIM HE’S IN CONTROL:

Even though your behind the wheel, you want him to feel like he’s calling the shots.  Ask him what time he’d like his daughter home.  Make sure he knows where you two will be and how he can reach you.  Go the extra mile and set up a group date so that he will feel more comfortable.  And by all means, NEVER EVER tell him if you two are going to be alone.  This will result in a FAILED OPERATION!  Put the incing on the cake by bringing her home a ½ hour before curfew!

RESPECT:

We’ve detailed how to respect her dad but make sure you’re respecting your girl as well.  Open doors, pull out chairs and speak to her with a caring, respectful tone.  Show ABSOLUTELY NO AFFECTION IN FRONT OF HER DAD…or her mother for that matter.  Be sure to compliment the mom’s cooking because then she’ll root for you when her dad assesses you at the end of the night.

 Hope that was helpful!
