Cops in Colusa, Calif., northwest of Sacramento, said the tragic accident happened at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
The girl and her brother were in the room together, while their mother, a church volunteer, and two siblings were helping out in other rooms, cops said.
Paramedics rushed the girl to Colusa Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, cops said. Emergency responders said she suffered severe head trauma.
The child’s father is a well-known doctor in Colusa, and her mother was a devoted church volunteer, CBS Sacramento reported. The victim was a student at the church’s elementary school.
Parishioners at Our Lady of Lourdes said they were devastated by the news.
“It’s very upsetting,” one parishioner told the station.
