Remember the HBO show “Tales From The Crypt” that aired from 1989 to 1996? Well it’s making a comeback! According to Collider, the series will be coming back to TV soon but this time will be based on the comic book version and not just a re-do of the old show. No word on which network will be airing the show quite yet but read more about it after the jump!

Deadline reports that this new version will not be an anthology nor will it be related to the HBO show, but will instead be a serialized version “that uses characters from the comic books in a more modern context.” The producers are expected to take the show to both broadcast and cable networks shortly with a detailed pitch and bible in hand for the new show. The report mentions that Cinemax has showed interest, as the sister-channel to HBO is now returning to original programming.

I’m not sure how tame the show would have to be in order to air on a broadcast network, so I’m hoping it finds a home on a cable outlet. In order to capture the camp and horror-filled tone of the comics, a certain amount of artistic freedom is needed for the necessary gore/creature aspects of the show. As the series is being shopped as part of the current development cycle, we’ll hopefully know more soon.

From 1989 to 1996 the horror anthology series Tales from the Crypt served as delightfully creepy late-night programing for those who had HBO, and sufficiently terrified youngsters whose parents forgot what aired on the pay-cable channel after 10pm. The show originated from the comic book series of the same name, and now the Cryptkeeper may be returning to small screen to scare a whole new generation.

Gil Adler (producer on the original Crypt series) and Andrew Cosby (co-creator of Eureka) are developing a new hourlong series based on the comics, and are shopping their version around as part of the current development cycle. Hit the jump for more details.
