Residents of Sedamsville got the scare of their lives Wednesday, when they found a python lurking in the trash.

Nate Allbright said he was doing yard work in the 600 block of Delhi Avenue when his sister found a snake under a pile of trash in the back yard.

Allbright and his father managed to catch the snake with an improvised snare and put it in a trash can before calling authorities.

“Initially, (the officer) thought we had a black snake and we panicked and thought it was a python, but we opened the can, and he saw it was indeed a python,” Allbright said.

Allbright said he thought the snake was about 15 feet long and weighed more than 100 pounds.

“I knew it wasn’t venomous, so I figured it wouldn’t be too hard of an issue getting him. Not that I want to be bitten by a snake, but I figured, I need to get him, my sisters are scared, my mother doesn’t care for snakes, and if he gets in my house, I’m moving out,” he said.

The SPCA was called in to take away the snake. Arrowhead Reptile Rescue said that the snake was a 14-foot-long tiger reticulated python weighing 130 pounds.

The rescue group said the snake is commonly kept as a pet and is found mostly in zoos, private collections and with serious reptile hobbyists.

No one was hurt, but the group said the snake could have killed an adult human if it were to attempt to do so.

The rescue group is currently taking care of the snake.
