The deal, the sources said, includes $36 million guaranteed and will be worth $40 million over the first three years. The $31 Million guaranteed over three years given to Tennessee’s Chris Johnson recently had been the record for deals given to a running back.

“Adrian’s performances on the field have given fans so much excitement since he first joined us as a rookie,” Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said in a statement released by the team. “His talent and determination are remarkable and we are proud to have him be a part of the family for years to come.”

Peterson was in the final year of his rookie contract.  The Vikings’ first-round draft pick in 2007, Peterson has been a Pro Bowler each of his four seasons, earned 2007 Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and has earned All-Pro honors in 2007, 2008 and 2009.  Peterson holds the NFL single-game rushing record with 296 yards against San Diego in 2007, is tied for the Vikings career rushing touchdowns record with 52 and has four of the top five single-game and single-season rushing marks in team history. Peterson is second in Vikings history to Robert Smith in career rushing yards and career 100-yard rushing games.
