The United Nations on Sunday said that the humanitarian crisis was “still growing” after exceptionally heavy monsoon rains.

A UN statement said says it would help victims of flooding in Sindh that had left around 200,000 people homeless.

Many of the affected communities are still recovering from the last year’s devastating nationwide floods, it said.

It said it would quickly began distributing food, water and housing in Sindh.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has appealed to the international community to help flood victims. The floods began in August and have reportedly killed about 200 people.

Meanwhile, in the light of immense damages caused by the floods in some parts of the country, Chinese Ambassador Liu Jian called on Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar on Sunday to express sympathy and solidarity of the Chinese people with flood affectees and declared that the Chinese government will provide an emergency humanitarian aid of RMB 30 million to help relief efforts. Diplomats and staff of the Chinese Embassy have recently voluntarily donated Rs 0.6 million while the Chinese ambassador handed over the donations to a representative of National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza at the embassy on September 8.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi also sent a message to Hina Khar, expressing his profound condolence for the flood victims. He said that China feels as much pain as Pakistan does and is ready to provide help to the best of its ability. He is convinced that the Pakistani people will definitely prevail over the natural disaster and rebuild their homes.

Separately, UNICEF Pakistan Representative, Dan Rohrmann, on Sunday stressed the need for reaching children with clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene messages ensuring additional health services to prevent disease outbreaks in flood affected areas of Sindh.

He said following the official request for assistance by the government, UNICEF is working closely with the National Disaster Management Authority, Provincial Disaster Management Authorities, and other UN agencies to urgently assess the level of humanitarian needs. staff report/ agencies
