Luis Arnao, 25, was driving southbound on White Plains Road in a 2011 Honda Accord when he slammed into a 22-year-old man who was crossing the street at the intersection of East 241 Street shortly before 4 a.m., police said.
Arnao, who has been on the police force since July 2010, stayed at the scene as officers and medics responded.
EMS took the pedestrian, identified as Tyre Chisholm of the Bronx, to Montefiore Hospital, but he was transferred to Jacobi Hospital, where he died, the NYPD said.
Investigators determined that Arnao was intoxicated, so they arrested him, authorities said.
Arnao, who is assigned to Patrol Borough Bronx, has since been suspended from the force and charged with vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, police said.
