Isiah Thomas is “working behind the scenes to help the Knicks land Chris Paul,” the New York Daily News reports. Paul can become a free agent in the summer of 2012, and many league observers anticipate he’ll look for greener pastures outside of New Orleans.

If Paul goes to New York, he’d be joining Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire to form the Knicks’ own version of the Big Three. Whether that’s feasible, however, is contingent upon the parameters under the next collective-bargaining agreement, which is expected to be much more restrictive in terms of teams’ payrolls.

Stoudemire, meanwhile, is among the NBA players who have been working out at Florida International University, where Thomas is head coach, ESPN’s Chris Broussard reported via Twitter. Joe Johnson, Jannero Pargo and Juwan Howard have also been at FIU, according to Broussard.

Thomas was instrumental in the Knicks signing Stoudemire in the summer of 2010, the Daily News notes. He also influenced the Knicks’ decision to trade for Carmelo Anthony this past season, according to the paper.

New York media has long reported that Thomas still has the ear of Knicks owner James Dolan. Thomas left the organization as president and head coach in 2008, but he is still believed to have a close relationship with Dolan.
