Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade and NBA commissioner David Stern had a contentious moment during Friday’s NBA labor meeting.

Stern made a comment and pointed at Wade, who took offense to the move and felt like Stern was belittling him. Wade responded by yelling his rebuttal at Stern, ESPN.com learned from a source close to the situation.

Following the exchange, several star players considered storming out of the meeting. They only returned to the negotiating table after both sides separated for a cooling-down session. Stern asked to speak privately with union executive Billy Hunter. Hunter would later diffuse the situation and ask players to return to the table, ESPN.com reported.

A collection of superstar players showed up in a large group to Friday’s meetings. There were 21 players—including Wade, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul—on hand with the players’ association executive committee and president Derek Fisher. Ray Allen, Elton Brand, Baron Davis and Paul Pierce were also at the meeting.

One source told ESPN.com that Hunter’s ability to corral the players and bring them back to negotiations was a “lifeline” for Stern, who could have looked bad if players left with 10 owners present.
