The 81-year-old told the New York Post: ‘When I came in, he grabbed me by my throat with his left arm and he was hitting me with his right hand. I tried to defend myself, but he was behind me I was taken by surprise.

‘I couldn’t talk or say anything, I was just trying to defend myself.’

After punching and kicking him repeatedly in the head, he made off only with $30, his gold crucifix and his Medicare ID.

The father-of-three and grandfather-of-two who is a retired boiler operator said he is still mad at the thug who assaulted him but said he will come to accept it in time.

He has lived in the building for for 35 years and was hospitalised with minor injuries and left with a black right eye.

The octogenarian told the Gothamist: ‘Everything has changed. I used to go get my hair cut at two or three in the morning, and I’d never have a problem.

‘Now it’s different. These young kids don’t respect the old people like they used to.’

Police believe the thug is between 17 and 20 years old and was wearing a dark blue T-shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers at the time of the attack.

The video comes just days after two deadly shootings were caught on camera in the Brooklyn area of New York.

Andrew Burke, 79, was shot dead outside the Brooklyn barbershop he had attended for 40 years, killed by a pair of gunmen who were aiming at someone else.

The two suspects, who are still on the loose, were chasing another man down the street on Friday when he ran inside Fest’s Barber Shop and they let loose a flurry of bullets into its doorway.

On Thursday, dramatic footage of a teenager being shot at point-blank range in a gun ambush outside McDonald’s was released.

Three gunmen shot 18-year-old Tyquan Sewall four times leaving him staggering backwards into the street.
He was left fighting for his life in hospital
