Firefighters responded in force this morning to a blaze at the Happy Valley Spa on the second floor of a five-story building at 31 West 46th Street near Fifth Avenue.
The FDNY plucked three men – one of them shirtless – off the roof of the five-story building and brought them down the ladder to safety as smoke billowed from the building, which houses St. Mark’s 2Bros. Pizza on the ground floor and is residential on the top three floors.
“Three were standing on the roof and they evacuated them down the ladder,” said Steve Ginther, who lives next door.
One firefighter was taken from the scene on a stretcher but did not appear to be seriously hurt.
More than a dozen fire trucks and ambulances rushed to the blaze and possible hazmat situation, which was called in at 10:38 a.m.
West 46th between Fifth and Sixth avenues was closed as tourists and gawkers gathered to take photos. There was no immediate report of injuries.
There was heavy damage on the second floor that was visible from the street, and the blaze appeared mostly under control as of 11:40 a.m.
