Former NBA star Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway will announce today that he plans to play a role in a $20 million project that will impact “the future of youth sports in Memphis.”

Hardaway has scheduled a 4:30 p.m. press conference at Gameday Sports Park in Cordova for the announcement.

There also were indications late Monday that Miami Heat star LeBron James would appear at the announcement. The news conference was moved from the original 5:30 to allow Hardaway and James to get to the DeSoto Civic Center for the Rudy Gay charity game tonight.

Those associated with Gameday or Hardaway have declined to provide details about the announcement. But the Gameday group has had a planned development on the books for about three years — a development across from the current complex at 7800 Fischer Steel that, among other things, would include a building for basketball.

It is unclear if Hardaway’s announcement encompasses any part of that project destined for 26 vacant acres on the southeast corner of Fischer Steel and Herbert. But Becky West, who is handling media inquiries about the news conference, said last week the announcement involves a $20 million investment. Sprite is also listed on the announcement with Hardaway.

The announcement is the latest of several recent projects Hardaway has done in the community, such as Hoopfest Benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and a $1 million donation to help fund the University of Memphis Athletics Hall of Fame.
