Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky told the New York Times that coach Joe Paterno never talked to him about any suspicions of sexual misconduct with minors. Sandusky spoke to the Times in his first extended interview since his indictment on sexual abuse charges last month.

Sandusky was charged on Nov. 5 with abusing eight boys, some on campus. A grand jury said the allegations were not immediately brought to the attention of authorities even though high-level people at Penn State apparently knew about at least one of them.

The scandal has resulted in the departures of Paterno and school president Graham Spanier. Athletic director Tim Curley has been placed on administrative leave, and vice president Gary Schultz, who was in charge of the university’s police department, has stepped down.

Schultz and Curley are charged with lying to the grand jury and failure to report to police, and Sandusky is charged with child sex abuse. All maintain their innocence.

Paterno was told in 2002 that Sandusky had molested a 10-year-old boy in the showers at the university’s football building. Sandusky told the Times Paterno never spoke to him or confronted him about the accusation. Sandusky said Paterno never spoke to him about any allegations, not the 2002 episode in the shower nor an earlier complaint of child molestation in 1998 that was investigated by the Penn State campus police.

“I never talked to him about either one,” Sandusky told the Times of Paterno. “That’s all I can say. I mean, I don’t know.”

Sandusky maintained his innocence. He met his alleged victims through his charity, the Second Mile. He told the newspaper he did give the children money and gifts, but asked for nothing in return.

“They’ve taken everything that I ever did for any young person and twisted it to say that my motives were sexual or whatever,” Sandusky told the Times.

“I had kid after kid after kid who might say I was a father figure. And they just twisted that all.”
