The UFC announced Saturday it will add a 125-pound flyweight division in early 2012.

President Dana White confirmed the news following UFC 140 at Air Canada Centre. The new division’s first fights will take place at an unannounced pay-per-view event March 3.

In fights to determine the first two title contenders, Ian McCall (11-2) will face Demetrious Johnson (9-2) and Joseph Benavidez (15-2) meets Yasuhiro Urushitani (19-4-6).

“It’s not really a tournament,” White said. “It’s two fights in the same weight class with the best guys — we’ve done that a million times. Both fights on the same card and who wins will fight for the title.”

White didn’t have the specifics on how many 125-pound fighters have been signed by the promotion, but added, “We wouldn’t do it if we didn’t have a stacked division.”

The addition of the flyweight division has been expected for months, as White confirmed the UFCs intent to bring it in earlier this year. The promotion added the 145-pound featherweight and 135-pound bantamweight divisions for the first time in 2011.

The 125-pound flyweight class will mark the eighth weight division in the promotion.
