Just a few short days after Russell Brand filed for divorce from Katy Perry, a close source has revealed the reason behind it all. Apparently, 27-year-old Perry wasn’t ready to put her career on hold to start a family–something that probably should have been discussed before marriage? Hit the jump to read the full story.

(DailyMail)–The star, 36, announced on Friday that the couple’s 14-month marriage was over after they spent Christmas apart and were both photographed without their wedding rings.

Brand’s lawyers filed divorce papers at Los Angeles Superior Court citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ between the pair who met at the MTV Music Awards in 2009 and were married in India a year later.

But last night sources close to Brand, who has carved out a successful Hollywood career starring in films such as the 2011 remake of Arthur, blamed the marriage breakdown on the fact his 27-year-old wife was not prepared to put motherhood ahead of fame.

One said: ‘I don’t think Katy really understood what marriage was about. I don’t think she was prepared to give up her career.

‘This wasn’t one of those occasions when Russell was mucking about, he wanted to settle down and have a family.

‘I don’t think that’s what Katy wants.  I think she’s very confused. They’ve been speaking a lot.

‘There have been a lot of phone calls this week. Katy is 27. That’s not too young to get married. But professionally she is in a very powerful position.

‘She’s just done a year-long tour, she’s incredibly successful and she wasn’t ready to give up her career. I don’t think she was prepared to give that up and give time to the marriage.

‘It was reported she was taking a year off, but I don’t think she’s doing that. It’s very sad. Russell is very cut up about it all.

‘It’s not great news. It is very raw and very recent. I don’t know what will come from this.’

So far Miss Perry, who is understood to be in Hawaii, has not commented on the end of the marriage.

Yesterday, Brand was seen leaving the Savoy Hotel in  Central London where he is believed to be staying.

Dressed in a grey jumper and leather jacket, the star made a low-key exit from the hotel with his face hidden by dark sunglasses and a woollen hat. One of those accompanying him was singer Florence Welch from the band Florence and the Machine.

On Friday, Katy’s father, Keith Hudson, 64, a born-again evangelical Christian who tours American churches with his wife Mary, was visibly upset as he spoke outside his home in Irvine, California.

He said: ‘I can’t talk, I’m sorry about that. I’ve had 1,500 people calling me today. I’m really sorry.’

News of the split came after months of speculation about the state of the couple’s relationship as they struggled to make time to see each other between their work commitments.

In November, Brand was forced to play down reports his wife had already filed for divorce during an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres chat show saying: ‘What? She could have told me.’

But the rumour mill went into overdrive when the couple were both photographed without their wedding rings as they spent Christmas 7,000 miles apart.

Brand was pictured in Cornwall on Christmas Day where he was understood to have spent the weekend with comedian David Baddiel, while his wife was seen frolicking in the surf in Hawaii with a male friend.

In his statement confirming the marriage was over, he said: ‘Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage.

‘I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.’

Yesterday, an American website claimed it was former stand-up comedian Brand who filed the divorce papers because Miss Perry, who was brought up by her deeply religious parents, did not want to be the one ending the marriage.

The site claimed the couple agreed to end their marriage weeks ago but wanted to wait until they were both out of the country before the papers were filed on Friday.
