The “Contraband” actor hoped to pull himself out of a tailspin after he told Men’s Journal he could have done a better job than the valiant passengers and flight crew aboard American Airlines Flight 11 — the 92 brave souls who had no idea five Al Qaeda hijackers armed with box cutters were planning the most devastating suicide mission in American history.

“If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did,” Wahlberg says in the magazine’s February issue. “

There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.’ ”

In a statement released Wednesday, Wahlberg said it was “ridiculous” that he speculated about the situation in the first place.

“To suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible. I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention,” he said.

Walberg had been booked on Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles but changed his ticket at the last minute to attend the Toronto Film Festival.

That flight, piloted by mastermind Mohamed Atta, was the first to hit the World Trade Center.
