When the announcer at Madison Square first called Metta World Peace’s name across the arena’s speakers, a sarcastic laughter rained down on to the court, aimed at the Queensbridge product formerly known as Ron Artest.

The Lakers’ World Peace knows how to leave an impression. And he has some advice on how Jeremy Lin can do the same.

“Get some swag,” World Peace was quoted as saying by Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com, when asked about the Knicks’ emerging young star. “Put your hat on backwards. Come to practice with your pants sagged and just tell them, ‘I don’t feel like practicing. Practice?!‘ You know? ‘Practice?!‘ Wear an [Allen] Iverson jersey.”

World Peace also said that Lin, who blew up for 38 points and seven assists on Friday night, should take Linsanity to another level by wearing shades and leather pants.

“He needs a better haircut,” World Peace said before the Knicks upended the Lakers 92-85 Friday night. “I don’t like that style. You’re in New York, fashion’s capital. Change your haircut. You’re a star now. Wear some shades. Put down the nerdy Harvard glasses, put on some black shades with some leather pants. Change your style.

“He should wear leather pants. He’s the type of guy that should wear leather pants and some nice shoes and change his fashion. You’re Jeremy Lin, for God’s sake.”

Lin, the same kid who averaged less than 10 minutes in 29 games with Golden State last year, validated the hype during the game, helping the Knicks start with a 13-4 run. Then he closes the game with seven points, including a huge 3-pointer and a circus reverse layup that put New York ahead by 10 with less than three minutes left.

“If you keep yourself ready, then you’ll stay ready,” World Peace said after the game. “Obviously he’s been working on his game. I don’t think he played a lot at Golden State. He played sometimes. But obviously, he’s been working on his game.”
