It is unclear how Margareta Scheibe died or how long she was buried, the Chicago Tribune reported. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.

Police first visited the house in the village of Worth on Saturday after receiving reports of a terrible stench.

Authorities dressed in hazmat suits discovered a house that was filled with garbage, according to FOX 32 News in Chicago. One neighbor even called it the “stinky house.”

The trash reached the ceiling in certain parts of the house, and even spilled out of several windows, police said. Numerous stray cats were often seen around the property, which was littered with garbage, broken lawn mowers and other equipment. Two cars parked there were also filled with trash.

“I don’t know what was inside the house,” neighbor William Pallardy told NBC 5 News. “I don’t know her that well, but it was pretty nasty.”

Police did not locate Scheibe’s decomposed body until Tuesday.

Scheibe lived with her 42-year-old son, who was taken into custody Tuesday but has not been charged in her death.
