Veteran running back Marion Barber has retired, the Chicago Bears announced Friday.

The 28-year-old spent six seasons with the Dallas Cowboy before signing with the Bears last season.

He backed up Matt Forte, and the move comes a day after the Bears agreed to terms with backup running back Michael Bush. That deal made it likely that the Bears would release Barber.

Barber’s best season was in 2006 when he led the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 14. He made the Pro Bowl the following season with 975 yards and 10 TDs.

Last year Barber gained 422 yards on 114 carries, and he also scored six touchdowns.

His only game over 100 yards for the Bears was on Dec. 11 against the Broncos, and that was also his most infamous game as he ran out of bounds instead of letting the clock run late with the Bears leading. He then fumbled in OT to set up Denver’s game-winning field goal.
