Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith agreed to a three-year contract extension through 2015, an NFL source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The deal is expected to be signed and announced later Tuesday.

Smith returned to the Pro Bowl last season after a two-year absence, flourishing once again in the passing game after the Panthers drafted quarterback Cam Newton with the No. 1 overall pick.

The receiver, who turns 33 in May, had 79 receptions for 1,394 yards and seven touchdowns in 2011, his first 1,000-yard season since 2008.

He is the franchise’s all-time leader in receptions (699), receiving yards (10,278) and touchdown receptions (59).
