Cam Newton kicked off his foundation to help children in the Carolinas Thursday.

The Panthers quarterback hosted an event for Charlotte’s philanthropic leaders at The Fillmore. His mother and father spoke to the crowd about their family’s desire to help the pro bowler’s newly adopted home.

The Cam Newton Foundation operates under the motto “Everyone Matters.” The Foundation is set up to benefit children in the Carolinas by partnering with other established non-profits.

Although Newton focused on charity most of the night, he did take time to answer questions about being a finalist for the Madden game cover. Urban legend suggests players who grace the video game’s cover are cursed the following season with poor play, but Newton doesn’t believe it.

“I played video games as a kid, especially Madden. I am excited to hear my name around it. I will be happy if I get it, but I will still be happy even if I don’t because it’s an honor to even be mentioned in the running,” said Newton.

Newton said he hopes to become a more active and visible Charlotte resident during his second NFL season with the Panthers.
