Longtime NFL safety Brian Dawkins has retired from the NFL. The former Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eaglessafety made the announcement on his Twitter account on Monday.

Dawkins is ending an impressive 16-year career that started when the Eagles selected him in the second round of the 1996 NFL draft. He played in Philly for 13 seasons before moving onto the Broncos prior to the 2009 season. Surprisingly, he still played at a high level in Denver, despite his age.

The Broncos were likely bracing for this possibility. It’s good that Dawkins made the announcement before the NFL draft so the Broncos can make plans for life without him.
