When the Jets acquired Tim Tebow from Denver, one of the suggestions of ways to use him was to have him play on the punt team as the personal protector.

It seems that the Jets are following through on that suggestion. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the team has told Tebow that they will use him in that role during the 2012 season. It’s not clear if Tebow will be playing that role on every punt or if it will only be an occasional look, but the reason why the Jets would deploy Tebow that way makes sense.

Teams will have to pay more attention to fakes than they would if a non-quarterback was standing in front of the punter which will limit their ability to set up for returns when the Jets do go ahead and punt the ball. If they do decide to run a fake, Tebow is able to run the ball or draw the defense forward and then try a pass to get the first down. Tebow’s also big enough that he can be part of the coverage team without taking an undue injury risk.

There’s long been an argument that Tebow is a better football player than he is a quarterback at this point in his career. The Jets appear to be ready to let him prove it in a variety of roles this season.
