New research has found that when a baby is born to an obese mother, it is more likely to have much lower cognitive function than a child born to a mom with a healthy weight!
The study looked at 3,412 mothers and found a strong link between pre-pregnancy obesity and math and reading test scores of children.
One of the researchers explained:
“[T]hese findings suggest that children born to women who are obese before pregnancy might need extra support. It’s not only for their child’s sake. It’s also important for the health of the mother. But it is important to understand that maternal obesity during pregnancy could have implications for their children as well.”
The connection is pretty solid too because they controlled for variables that could affect intelligence like socioeconomics status, parental levels of education and home environment.
The researchers are still working on the reasons why but this connection should be enough to make a mom-to-be reconsider that next trip to McDonalds.
