Daily Mail – A Florida captain who said his ship sank is in hot water after his ex-girlfriend tattled on him to the police.

The Florida Department of Financial Services Division of Insurance Fraud arrested Robert Figueredo, 49, for allegedly sinking his own $1.86 million yacht in 2009 and claiming the insurance booty.

Officials hadn’t a clue of what unfolded until Figueredo’s ex-girlfriend told police he bragged that he sunk the boat on purpose.

‘There is no such thing as a victimless crime,’ Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater said.

Figueredo was arrested on a first-degree grand theft charge on Thursday, nearly three years after his boat, the ‘Star One’ went missing.

Police said the 80-foot yacht was reported stolen from Key Biscayne in Miami on May 4, 2009.

Just one day before, it was discovered scuttled in an area called the ‘Tongue of the Ocean’ offshore from the Bahamas.

Figueredo swore to the insurance company that he had no idea what happened to his yacht nor any idea of who might have taken it.

Investigators zeroed in and were able to charge Figueredo after his ex-girlfriend came forward.

‘Those who reap the spoils of perpetuating fraud victimize every Florida consumer,’ Mr Atwater said.

‘Those who cheat their fellow Floridians out of their hard-earned dollars will be captured and put behind bars.’

Figueredo faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
