An afternoon playing in the woods turned tragic for a Maryland family on Saturday when an 8-year-old accidentally shot his 11-year-old brother, who died.

Police responded to a call around 7 a.m. on Saturday morning from the boys’ grandmother, who said her grandson had been shot.

Investigators responded to the scene, according to a press release from the Harford County police department, and were told the boys heard shots in the woods “from an unknown direction fired by an unknown person.”

Police teams spent three hours searching the area for a stranger who could have fired the shot when they located a handgun hidden in the woods and determined it had been an accident.

The boys apparently took the gun from an elderly neighbor’s home where they had been helping with yardwork.

The victim, Michael Alexander Szoke, was shot in the head and died before he could reach the hospital, police said.

No charges have been filed pending a review by the Harford County State’s Attorney’s Office, police said.
