Deb Thompson went to a Goodwill store about 15 miles north of Minneapolis on Monday to purchase a pair of capri pants her daughter told her she might like because of the bling that adorns them. Thompson, who purchased the capris for $3.99, discovered a diamond ring in one of the pockets after she returned home.

“I took the ring out of my pocket and I sat on the floor with my daughter and her fiance,” Thompson told ABC News. “I put my arm out in the center, and I opened it in my palm and we all just went, ‘Wow. Oh my God.'”

Thompson took the ring to a jeweler in St. Paul who estimated its value at between $5,000 and $6,500. She also enlisted the help of Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota, which has posted a message on Facebook inviting anyone who thinks the ring may be theirs to contact the organization.

“This is truly a good Samaritan story,” Lisa Ritter, the marketing director of Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota, told the Daily News. “We have 2 million visitors go through our donation drive-throughs every year.”

Goodwill has received about 30 inquiries so far, according to Ritter, who said one may be from the rightful owner. “We have to get some of our due diligence done,” she added.

The high-stakes hunt has resulted in praise for Thompson.

“How wonderful that Deb Thompson is a kind and honest person to want to find the owner of this ring,” Terry Perrone commented on Facebook.

“What a wonderful lady – it’s so nice to hear about good people,” wrote Frank Nockels.

Thompson, 53, says she hopes the story of the ring will come full-circle. “I need to find the owner, and I’d love to hear the story of how it got in there,” Thompson told KSTP-TV.
