Police suspect a 26-year-old Queens woman who has disappeared may have joined a cult — but her family adamantly believes she has been harmed.
When Rajwinder Kaur left her Hollis home at 8 p.m. Sunday, her family thought she was heading to Brooklyn, where she volunteered helping the homeless.
Less than two hours later, her younger sister got an ominous text message from Kaur’s phone.
“It said ‘The girl with this phone is dead was smiling,’ ” according to an older sister, Lucky Kaur, 29. “This text really scared us.
“The phone has been turned off ever since.”
Police have not ruled out foul play, but sources said detectives think the missing woman may have joined a cult. They wouldn’t reveal all the reasons for their suspicion, but noted that she recently sold her belongings on eBay.
“No definitely not,” Lucky Kaur shot back. “She’s just the kind of person who selflessly gives. . . . What got us worried is she always comes home. She never stayed over anywhere.”
Her mother, Joginder Kaur, 51, said she and Rajwinder spent Sunday cleaning the house and that her deeply religious daughter did not seem troubled.
“She’s happy here at home,” the mother said.
