A Florida man who was released from jail on $50 bail after claiming he was disabled and would be ‘bedridden for the rest of his life’ shocked the courtroom when he quickly stood up and walked out of court moment after being freed.
Carl Funk, age 58, was arrested on a five-year-old warrant for trespassing and having an open container of alcohol. He claimed he couldn’t afford the judge’s initial offer of $100 bail because he was permanently confined to his bed.
He looked unsteady as two officers, each one grabbing an arm to support him, guided him into a chair at the North Broward Detention Center in south Florida on Friday.

‘I am disabled and it’s really a problem for me to move around,’ he told Judge John Hurley via video conference from the jailhouse, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
‘I really need to be in my bed and that’s where I’ll be for the rest of my life.’

The judge questioned how Funk could have been found trespassing with a beer in his hand five years ago if he was confined to a bed, as he claimed.
Funk responded that two unnamed, unidentified men had carried him out of his bed and dumped him on the property where he was found by police.
