Mariah Carey may be best known for her INCREDIBLE voice – and more recently, her role as a judge this season on American Idol – but it’s perhaps a lesser-known fact that she is also a talented songwriter, having penned some of her own biggest hits!
Well, thankfully, at the BMI Urban Awards this past Friday, her talents did NOT go unrecognized, as the diva was awarded with the publishing association’s Icon Award…despite showing up an hour into the ceremony!

During her acceptance speech, she explained:
“I’m so humbled by this moment because a lot of people still don’t know I write my own songs. It’s so great. I’ve been writing songs my whole life, I love it. It’s my favorite form of expression and release. Tonight’s not really about diva dramatics or gossipy moments, it’s about the music and that’s what’s important to me.”
