Weeks ago, we saw this picture of Tina Fey giving a “why am I doing this” thumbs up while standing next to Ryan Lochte while the Olympic hero was filming a guest spot on Fey’s NBC comedy, 30 Rock.
On the red carpet at Sunday night’s Emmy’s, Fey elaborated on what sort of role Lochte would have during his cameo.
She said the swimmer asked not to be typecast as a jeah-sounding super-brah, so he’ll instead be portraying a top biochemist who Liz accidentally runs into at a Mensa meeting (she stumbled into Lochte’s character’s while looking for her laser hair removal office).
No, we’re kidding. He’s playing a sex idiot.
Seriously, that’s what Tina Fey said. “He played — if I may use this term on television — a sex idiot,” she told E! “He was good at it.”
Good at what? The sex part or the idiot part? Never mind, don’t answer that.
It’s in an inspired bit of casting, like getting Michael Phelps to play wooden or making Missy Franklin into a bubbling teenager.
Lochte spoke about the guest appearance earlier this month. “It was a long morning,” he said at the the time. “We did a lot of takes, but, you know what, it was fun,” Lochte told E!’s Cat Sadler. “Being with Alec Baldwin on set … he’s a great guy. Great actor. I enjoyed it. I had so much fun. And I can’t really tell you what it was about, but it was outrageous.”
