Ozzie Guillen can understand why the Marlins might fire him after the season, but he thinks it would be unfair. Read more after the jump.
The Marlins manager has feuded with team owner Jeffrey Loria through the media recently, and he sparred with reliever Heath Bell in the past week. He said prior to Friday’s 2-1 win over the Phillies that he could understand why the Marlins might fire him after one season on the job, but he thinks that would be unfair.
“I think it would be unfair if they fire me after just one chance,” Guillen said in Spanish according to a translator, the Palm Beach Post reports.
“I don’t think they should worry about me. They’re not going to make it public … But like I said in Spanish, if the way we played this year, you think I should get fired? Of course. Yes. If I should get fired, that’s up to them.”
So in one breath Ozzie thinks being fired after only one season as manager would be unfair, but then he says he should be fired. Maybe there’s some language mix-up there.
While I agree that only one year generally isn’t enough to judge a manager, I couldn’t disagree with the team if they got rid of Ozzie. He was a distraction from the beginning of the season, and many of his players have underperformed. Ultimately the manager is responsible if his team is doing as poorly the Marlins are. I can’t imagine another team hiring him in the near future, either.
