Hurricane Sandy’s ferocious waves flooded Fire Island, N.Y., the barrier island off Long Island, leveling many dunes. One dune eroded about 72 feet to reveal a shipwreck approximately four miles east of Davis Park — though its identity is not certain.

It is “a rare treat to see something exposed,” said Paula Valentine, a Davis Park spokesperson.

Archaeologists have been analyzing the ship while they still have the opportunity. In time, the ocean will bury it beneath the sand once more.

“There’s so little of it left we may not be not be able to determine which ship it actually is, but we may be able to learn more about its age,” Valentine said.

Various theories exist as to the ship’s true identity. Experts at the Long Island Maritime Museum speculate that the ship is a post-Civil War wooden cargo ship built before 1880, according to Newsweek.
