Mexico is making moves to change it’s name to…Mexico. You probably didn’t know but Mexico is really “United Mexican States” and just called Mexico for short. Now, 200 years later, Mexico will actually be able to call itself Mexico. Mexican officials who deal with diplomatic relations and official documents inregards to public relations are the only people who still call it “United Mexican States.” President Felipe Calderon announced on Thursday that sent a piece of legislation to the Mexican Congress to make the name change official. Calderon, who is literally in his last days in office and will have to give up his seat on December 1, said:

“It’s time that we Mexicans retake the beauty and simplicity of our motherland’s name: Mexico. (It’s) a name that we use when chanting or singing, a name that identifies us throughout the world and that makes us proud.”

There’s no word if Mexican Congress will move quickly in changing the name or if they will deal with more pressing issues.
