The New York Times yesterday reported the New York Giants players believe suspended Saints coach Sean Payton has been communicating with his team. The players made it clear that they did not have any proof to back this up, and they were not trying to single out coach Payton, but rather were saying they think any coach would try it. Giants punter Steve Weatherford said ” Of course he will get his message to them somehow”. He went on to say “I’m not saying anything about coach Payton as a person or anything, but I think any coach would do that. It’s not like he is just going to sit at home and watch the games and not have any thoughts. His message will be heard”. It does bring up an interesting point though, because at the end of the day the NFL is really limited as far as being able to make sure Payton has no contact with the team. They are not the government and do not work with secret international spies. They can not bug his phone or monitor his email or things like that. So who knows, maybe the Giants players bring up a valid point.

For anyone not familiar with the situation, the Saints coach was suspended for an entire season this year for taking part in a bounty program within the New Orleans organization that reportedly paid players bonus money for injuring other players and for knocking them out of games. He is not to have any contact with his team at all this season, and if he is caught doing so would face even harsher penalties including possibly never being allowed to return to the NFL.
