Alberto Gonzales the former Attorney General from the Bush administration doesn’t have a problem with people in Colorado or people in Washington getting high, aside from the fact that it’s against Federal Law. In other words he doesn’t really care if you want to get high as long as it doesn’t get you in trouble. This is an interesting stance for a prominent Republican to speak this way is not traditional and most prominent politicians take a more anti drug use policy. Gonzales goes on to list some reasons why the federal Government might want to keep it illegal but it may not be the reasons you suspected. Hit the jump for more.

Gonzales isn’t bothered by the smoke, and I’m sure he’s probably not the only one but the Federal Law still applies so whether it’s legal in Colorado, Washington, California, New Jersey or Massachusetts it’s still illegal. The former Attorney General cited that government tax dollars that go to help victims who cannot afford health care might be the reason why Government officials are afraid to legalize marijuana. Gonzales said that there are people out there who associate smoking marijuana with long term health risk issues. It sounds like a bit of joke I mean they slap warnings on cigarette packs but they still sell them. Morally the nation has to decide if this is really one of the issues we want to battle over. Of course Marijuana supporters are going to highlight the pro’s of legalization and try to discredit the con’s and vice versa for those against it, though I think with the generational change if it was put to a vote the nation would be loud and clear on how it felt about the issue.
