Jovan Belcher sent a text message to his secret girlfriend saying he “would shoot” Kasandra Perkins, just months before he killed her and later took his own life, according to the police report obtained by the Kansas City Star.

The newspaper reported Tuesday that the late Kansas City Chiefs linebacker texted the other woman that he “would shoot” the 22-year-old mother of his 3-month-old daughter “if she didn’t leave him alone.” According to the police report, the secret girlfriend believed Belcher was joking.

Belcher, 25, murdered Perkins on Dec. 1 and then drove to Arrowhead Stadium where he shot himself in the head. He used different guns to kill Perkins and then himself.

Belcher’s mother, Cheryl Shepherd, gave details of the murder, according to the report. She said she had moved in with the couple two weeks before their deaths because they were having “relationship problems due to financial issues associated with Perkins’ spending habits.” Shepherd also said that the argument that preceded Perkins’ killing “was in regard to one or both of them going out as in to a club or partying.”

Police said in the report that they found a bullet hole in the floor under Perkins’ body that went through to the basement, possibly indicating that the victim was on the floor when she was shot. Shepherd said, according to police, that she heard a thump before the gunshots.

Police found 10 apparent gunshot wounds in the front of Perkins body and five on her back. According to the report, the medical examiner found four bullets remaining in her body.
