Mayor Michael Bloomberg is blaming Apple for the crime increase, saying that if it weren’t for a growth in theft of iPhones and iPads in New York City that crime would in fact be down. The Mayor cited an increase in thefts of the popular devices as the key thing raising the New York City Crime Index this year, but goes on to show that though crime is up, this has also been one historically one of the safest years for other reasons. iPhone and iPad Robberies are up but homicides are down. Mayor Bloomberg and Police Chief Ray Kelly said that as of this morning 414 homicides have been recorded, at this pace 2012 is set to be the safest year since they started recording homicides comparably in 1963.
