He fell just short of setting one of the NFL’s most venerable records, but Adrian Peterson’s remarkable season for the Minnesota Vikings has yielded him at least one piece of hardware.

The All-Pro running back was named the 2012 Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year on Saturday night at the NFL Honors awards show in New Orleans. Peterson rushed for 2,097 yards in 2012 — finishing just 9 yards shy of Eric Dickerson’s single-season record. Peterson also had 13 total touchdowns (12 rushing) as he led the Vikings to a 10-6 record and an unexpected wild-card berth.

Peterson rebounded from tearing the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee on Dec. 24, 2011.

Despite the severe injury, Peterson had his best season in the NFL.
