Texas receiver Cayleb Jones has been charged with aggravated assault – a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison – after throwing a punch and fracturing the jaw of Texas sophomore tennis player Joey Swaysland at a bar on East Sixth Street at 1:50 am on Feb. 22, according to Austin Police Department Corporal Anthony Hipolito.
According to the police, Jones saw Swaysland talking to Texas sophomore volleyball player Katherine Bell, someone Jones had dated in the past, became angry and punched Swaysland, who did not see the punch coming.
Swaysland, an international student from Australia, has been sidelined from the Texas tennis team after having surgery to repair his fractured jaw.
Bell, who goes by Khat, was a key contributor on Texas’ national championship team this year.
Bell told police her relationship with Jones ended on bad terms and that he had been jealous ever since and has anger issues, according to the police report.
