Cheers erupted from students who packed the auditorium at West Charlotte High School Thursday as basketball legend Michael Jordan announced a new community outreach initiative.

Jordan, the majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, was on the first stop of a three-school swing to announce a $200,000 gift to the YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s Y Achievers program. The money is a joint donation from the Bobcats and FOX Sports Carolinas/Sports South.

At each of the three schools — West Charlotte, West Mecklenburg and Vance — Jordan surprised a student with news that he or she would get a $5,000 college scholarship. He also unveiled a new program that will have six students from Y Achievers doing paid summer internships with the team, The Charlotte Observer reported.

The Y Achievers program works through Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to encourage at-risk students to attend college and develop into upstanding adults.

“There were so many people that supported me through my whole career that I grew up with,” Jordan said at the West Charlotte stop. “I feel compelled to be able to come back and make a big difference.”
