15-year-old Musa Hassan told the Associated Press, “We were sleeping when we heard gunshots. When I woke up, someone was pointing a gun at me.” After putting his arm up in defense, one of the militants shot his dominant hand, taking off four fingers. This is just one of many perspectives from the tragic events.

Reuters reported that, “it was the deadliest of three attacks on schools since the military launched an offensive in May to try to crush Boko Haram, an Islamist insurgent group whose nickname translates as ‘Western education is sinful’ in the northern Hausa language.”

As per BBC, “Boko Haram promotes a version of Islam which makes it ‘haram,’ or forbidden, for Muslims to take part in any political or social activity associated with Western society.”
