A Japanese company has a new way of promoting weight loss as a positive. they decided that they would give discounts in rent to women who lost the most weight.

“The Lady Share House B&D, an all-female, communal residential facility in Osaka, Japan, now deducts 1,000 yen (or about $10) from a tenant’s rent for every 2.2 pounds they lose, and increases rent if a tenant gains weight”.

Women are weighed in every three months in order to track their progression. The Broad Enterprise Administrator, Mari Kataoka expressed that the original hope was for obese women to be encouraged to move into the facility and the rent decrease was put in place to give an incentive for their weight loss. The community within the building is supposed to be a supportive one, providing exercise equipment for tenants, discounted beauty products and healthy snacks promoting “resistance to temptation”. Yet many of the tenants are actually women whom are happy with their body and merely want to maintain their figure. This seems like a plan set up for eating disorders. Hopefully it isn’t and their “goals” aren’t met at the cost of others.
