The TracFone wireless phone company owned by the world’s richest man, Mexican Billionaire Carlos Slim, is currently owing the state of California big bucks! The company is being held responsible for the lack of fee payments that were required of every telecommunications company, “according to a July 11 decision from ALJ McKinney, the California Public Utilities Commission’s Presiding Officer”.
“The Consumer Protection and Safety Division brought action against TracFone, saying the company didn’t collect user fees from 2004 through 2012 or pay surcharges for public programs, like the Deaf and Disabled Telecommunications Program, from 2000 through 2012.”
The company is ordered to pay the lump sum of 24.4 million to the state of California in fees and interest. The company believed that they were exempt from fees due to the way that their phone program is set up; where one must buy a pre paid card then fill the phone with minutes. Yet the states verdict stated that they in fact where not exempt from any fees.
Carlos Slim created one of the most successfully empires within the prepaid phones market. He shouldn’t have a problem gathering up some change and paying his dues, right?
